Happy Birthday Elway

Today is John Elway’s 47th birthday, it’s hard to believe that the Broncos are going into their 9th season without John Elway at the helm.  Because I didn’t start going to games until I was in college, I never had the chance to go see Elway play in person, but I have great memories nonetheless.

This is a pretty cool video on Elway that’s floating around, one that was done for his retirement.  The music is a little cheesy, but a good video for Broncos fans.

Elway should come back?

I came across an article through the ESPN Hashmarks blog (a great NFL blog by the way) about a column that appears in the Denver Post by Woody Paige.  What page suggests is that Elway comes back in training camp, not to throw on the #7 jersey, but rather just to serve as a mentoring presence to Quarterback Jay Cutler.

Usually when I read a Woody Paige column I scratch my head half the time, but after a little head-scratching, this doesn’t seem like such a crazy idea, especially when the most seasoned QB in the clubhouse is Patrick Ramsey (I was originally hoping we could have gotten Drew Bledsoe or Brad Johnson to back-up Cutler – someone with more experience).

It would be great to see John come back and serve Broncos Country: part-coach/part-mentor for training camp.

Predicting wins – too much optimism without reality

You have to love seeing the dawn of football season on the horizon.  I’m especially excited about my Broncos, who have made a lot of great off-season moves.  Training camps are about a month away, and at this point each team is filled with optimism about their chances.  Unfortunately optimism can only go so far, giving way to reality.

I can across a story that made me bust out laughing – Detroit Lions QB Jon Kitna has predicted 10 wins for the Lions.  This, being a team that only won 3 games last year (and playing in a bad division at that), and hasn’t won more than 9 games since 1995 – where were you in ’95 (I was stil in middle school)?  Hey good luck to the Lions, but I’m not going to be putting a lot of stock into Jon Kitna’s optimism.  The Lions are the Lions.

The main reason I wanted to mention this is because it gives me the opportunity to reinforce the notion that Jon Kitna and Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan are the same person:

Apparently I’m not the only one who thinks so

Recap of "walking" weekend

A long and challenging weekend has come to an end.  Bethany participated in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer last weekend, enduring miles of walking in the grueling 90-degree weather.  I was lucky enough to be able to join her for the first few miles, riding my bike along the route, riding ahead to each cheering station so that I can cheer her along the way.  I was sad that I had to leave for the second half of Saturday’s walk, but was relieved and proud to hear that she made it all the way.

She was a true warrior all throughout the weekend, and gave it all before her hip gave out on Sunday and she had to cut her walk short.  I’m very proud of her, not only for giving it her all, but also for being able to face her situation and make the right decision and avoid long-term injury.  Even with the hurting hip, she managed to walk over 31 miles over the weekend – an amazing feat! Most importantly, Bethany raised over $1800, contributing to the $2+ million raised during the weekend in the fight against breast cancer.  Great job Bethany!
